How we calculate

Effective rate = median real estate taxes paid ÷ median home value, for each state.

The data

• Table B25103: median real estate taxes paid, owner-occupied homes.
• Table B25077: median home value, owner-occupied homes.
• Table B19013: median household income.

All from the American Community Survey 2025 1-year estimates, pulled 2026-11-03.

What it leaves out

• It's a ratio of two medians, not the rate on any one bill, and not a legal rate.
• Owners report these figures themselves, so home values and bills are their own estimates.
• State figures hide large differences between counties.
• It covers homes people live in, not rentals or commercial property.

Use it to compare states. For a real bill, ask your county assessor.
